What is the polyvagal theory ?

The polyvagal theory was developed in 1994 by Stephen Porges, an American neuroscientist.

What is it ?

According to Deb Dana, it is “The science of feeling safe in order to fall in love with your life and take the risk of living it 100%”.

This theory plays an essential role in building a feeling of security.

How ?

Polyvagal theory suggests that our feeling of safety depends on how our body reacts to situations. When our nervous system promotes relaxation and social connection, we feel safe. On the other hand, in the event of stress or threat, our body reacts differently, creating a feeling of insecurity. This shows how our bodily reactions influence our sense of security.

It allows us to navigate life more easily: it teaches us to become actors of our own nervous system.

How ?

Polyvagal theory shows us that we can influence our emotional well-being by doing simple things, like breathing deeply or relaxing. By understanding how our bodies respond, we can choose actions that help us feel better. In summary, it gives us the power to act on our own nervous system to promote well-being.

This theory develops the link between the ANS (autonomic nervous system) and human behaviors.

How ?

It explores how our nervous system influences our emotions and behaviors.

It highlights three branches of the autonomic nervous system which act as “brakes” or “accelerators” on our emotional responses. By understanding these interactions, we can better understand how our bodies react in different social and emotional situations.

In summary, by acting on our body, we act on our well-being.
